Joint operation results in reduction of gambling adverts placed on illegal websites
Through a joint operation run by the City of London Police’s Intellectual Property Crime Unit (PIPCU) and the Gambling Commission, there has been an 87% drop in adverts placed for gambling operators on illegal websites that infringe copyright in the last twelve months.
PIPCU’s Operation Creative seeks to stop licensed gambling operators inadvertently providing revenue to those committing crime online, and ultimately breaching the Gambling Commission’s licensing objective to keep crime out of gambling.
The operation is intrinsically linked to a new licence condition introduced in October last year, which requires operators to place digital adverts responsibly.
