The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) rulings are published every Wednesday and set out on the public record how, following investigation, the advertising rules apply and where the ASA draw the line in judging whether an ad has broken the rules.

This week’s rulings have been published, and the following advertisers have been formally investigated.

Rulings for 12 June 2019

An in-store point of sale price promotion by Furniture Village, seen on 12 January 2019, related to a divan set including mattress and base. A heading at the top stated “Sale”. Text stated “ASP £1099 – Introductory Offer £549”. Small text at the bottom stated “ASP = After Sale Price”.

A radio ad for Find Your PPI, heard on 29 March 2019, featured TV and radio presenter Sue Cook, who stated, “I’m Sue Cook and my life has been spent reporting news I believe is in the consumer’s interest. There’s a company claiming to offer a free service that reveals whether you’ve paid PPI. They’re called Find Y…

Three banner ads for seen on YouTube and

a. The banner ad seen on YouTube on 15 December 2018 stated “TESCO is hiring!” using the font and colours normally used by Tesco. Further text stated “Starting from £23 – £47/hr” followed by an “Apply Now” button. Further text stated “£23 – 47/hr Jobs” followed by the Just Jobs website address and a “VISIT SITE” button.

b. The banner ad seen on on 14 and 19 January 2019 contained identical text and information, plus additional text which stated “Hiring Now – No Experience Required – Full Time & Part Time Jobs”.

c. The banner ad seen on 22 December 2018 stated “Royal Mail is hiring!” using the font and colours normally used by Royal Mail. Further text stated “Starting from £15 – 23/hr” followed by an “Apply Now” button. Further text stated “Royal Mail is Hiring Now” followed by another “Apply Now” button.
